Welcome Party Report

posted in: News

At the end of July, Aid For Japan staged a special event to welcome some of the Japanese orphans to the UK.

Aid For Japan has made a point of organising UK visits for the orphans on a regular basis since 2011. For children that have lost their parents, this is an important step that not only broadens their view of the world but also reminds them that the world remembers them.

Some of the charity’s volunteers (Angela, Sei and Paul) started the day off by collecting snacks for the event from the Japan Centre in London. The event itself took place at St John The Baptist in leafy Kingston Vale where a tasty range of barbecued food was available. But there was also a Japanese element to the refreshments with onigiri rice balls and doryaki snacks.

Among the attendees were our 3 young volunteers, David, Alex and Zak, who had spent the summer in Japan helping to raise awareness of the charity.

The volunteers gave a presentation to talk a little about their adventures in Japan, before doing a brief musical performance, which included Beatles cover songs. To finish off, Aid For Japan’s founder Akemi Solloway, did a traditional Japanese dance.

The event helped to raise over £500 towards Aid For Japan’s mission with the costs of the evening greatly reduced by the kind donation of food by David’s parents and Japanese snacks provided by the Japan Centre.

Aid For Japan extends its grateful thanks to David’s parents, the Japan Centre, our volunteers and all of the attendees at the party. If you wish to donate to the charity, please visit our Donations page.

A Visit To Kyoto

Our three volunteers in Japan, David, Alex and Zak, continue their adventures as they visit Kyoto.

Among the activities that the team undertook was a visit to Nijo Castle, a manga museum, Kyoto tower and a zen garden. The reports feature a wide selection of photos illustrating where the boys have been and makes for a fascinating travelogue of Japan.

This summer, Aid For Japan will be bringing some of the orphans of the 2011 tsunami/earthquake to the UK.

As part of this plan, our three young volunteers have flown out to Japan as part of a mission to help raise funds for the charity – and also raise awareness of its goals. David, Alex and Zak (who are all in their teens) will be tracking their progress on a special blog which will have regular updates on their travels. Once their visit to Japan is complete, David, Alex and Zak will be returning to the UK on the same plane as the orphans.

Fundraising in Osaka

posted in: Events, Fundraising

As part of our volunteers visit to Japan, David, Alex and Zak took part in a fundraising event in Osaka.

Prior to this, the boys took the opportunity to visit Osaka castle to enjoy both its history as well as the breathtaking views.

Meeting the president of the local Rotary Club, our volunteers were treated to dinner before the event itself began. The president gave a speech and the boys performed ‘Hey Jude’ and ‘Come together’. There was also a French family there who gave a speech about their experience in Japan whose daughter had stayed in Japan on an exchange sponsored by the Rotarians for a year.
